What Is Ethereum Classic?
Ethereum Classic is the original Ethereum blockchain that maintained its unaltered transaction history after the 2016 DAO hack. While Ethereum rolled back the hack through a hard fork, Ethereum Classic preserved the original ledger, upholding the principle of blockchain immutability and "code is law." It continues to operate as a proof-of-work smart contract platform.
What Can You Do With Ethereum Classic?
Ethereum Classic offers a proof-of-work alternative to Ethereum:
- Deploy and interact with smart contracts on an immutable blockchain
- Mine ETC using proof-of-work hardware for network rewards
- Build decentralized applications on a chain that upholds code-is-law principles
- Diversify your portfolio across both Ethereum ecosystems

When Did Ethereum Classic Start?
Ethereum Classic emerged in July 2016 when the Ethereum community split over how to handle the DAO hack, in which roughly $60 million in ETH was exploited. The majority of the community chose to hard fork and reverse the hack, creating today's Ethereum (ETH). Those who disagreed continued the original chain as Ethereum Classic, preserving the unaltered transaction history.
Is Ethereum Classic a Good Investment?
Ethereum Classic appeals to investors who value blockchain immutability and proof-of-work security. After Ethereum's Merge to proof of stake in 2022, ETC became the largest proof-of-work smart contract platform, attracting former Ethereum miners. However, it has a smaller developer community and ecosystem than Ethereum. Always consider your risk tolerance before investing.
Ethereum Classic is the chain that did not reverse the DAO hack
In 2016 an attacker drained a large contract called The DAO, and the Ethereum community voted to change the ledger to undo it. Most of the network followed. A minority did not, on the principle that an immutable ledger stops being one the moment it is edited by consensus of the inconvenienced, and kept the original chain running as Ethereum Classic. Everything about ETC follows from that decision. It is not a copy of Ethereum or a fork chasing it — it is the unedited history, and the people who hold it mostly hold it for that reason.
Still Proof of Work, with the security question that implies
Ethereum moved to Proof of Stake in 2022. Ethereum Classic did not, and remains a mined chain with a supply cap Ethereum never adopted. The honest caveat for a buyer is that a Proof of Work chain with a modest share of the available hashrate is cheaper to attack than a dominant one, and Ethereum Classic has suffered chain reorganisations from 51% attacks in the past, most seriously in 2020. Security has since improved, but the structural exposure is inherent to being a smaller Proof of Work chain and does not go away.
